Leadership Development

As women, we are the architects of our career and the best advocates for ourselves and each other.
To support navigating the complexities of career management, the ANUW Leadership Development Committee provides accessible and diverse programming and aggregates resources for women at all stages in their career who are interested in shaping or extending their presence as a leader. Programming, resources, and content from this committee are developed with the intention to engage with all ANUW members, considering accessibility, diversity, and application of content.

Please view the many resources we share at Northwestern Student Affairs Leadership Development & Community Engagement.

ANUW Leadership Development: Using Assertive Communication to Get What You Need

The ANUW Leadership Development Committee’s programming for this year focuses on the Center for Creative Leadership’s “Fundamental 4”: Self-Awareness, Communication, Influence, and Learning Agility.

This event centers on communication and will be led by executive and leadership coach, Ellen Burton. Assertive communication does not mean being aggressive. Assertive communication does not mean being demanding or rude. Assertive communication means getting one’s needs met while respecting the needs of others.

Following this seminar, participants will be better able to:

  • Recognize the differences among assertive, aggressive, passive and passive-aggressive communication
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively
  • Get their needs met

Check out the News and Events page for more details and RSVP links.

*Please note that all events for 2022 will be virtual and held on Zoom.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I participate in events? Do I need to be an ANUW member?

The majority of our events are limited to current ANUW members in order to establish a sense of community. However, in 2021, all ANUW events are open to all staff members at Northwestern given the virtual nature of events due to COVID-19. You can sign up to join ANUW here.

My organization is having a leadership-focused event that may be of interest to ANUW members. How can I share details on my event with ANUW membership?

  • ANUW manages a monthly newsletter to its members via a member-wide list-serv. If you would like to share details on your event with ANUW members, please email our committee, and we will review your request.
  • Additionally, we are always looking for ways to engage with partners across the Northwestern community. If you do not have an event but would like to establish a partnership, please reach out!

I’d like to join the committee. What are the requirements?

  • We’d love to have you! To join, email us.
  • Committee members are encouraged to attend and lead Leadership Development events, attend committee meetings, and participate in content management. Concerned about time commitments or responsibilities? We would be happy to have coffee and chat to see if it’s the right decision for you.

What is the difference between ANUW Leadership Development and the Northwestern University Women's Emerging Leaders Program?

  • ANUW Leadership Development is a committee that develops content for ANUW membership related to challenges women face during career management.
  • Northwestern University Women’s Emerging Leaders Program is a cohort-based leadership development program open to all University women by application, intended for early to mid-career growth.

How is ANUW connected to the Northwestern University Women's Emerging Leaders Program?

  • ANUW partnered with Northwestern’s Office of Human Resources to build an experiential program for small cohorts of early career women in 2017. All members of the cohort were provided access to ANUW membership to continue their journey.

Who can I reach out to for more information on the Northwestern University Women's Emerging Leaders Program?
